A Clear Overview On CD Jewel Cases

CD jewel cases which are also known as plastic cases are used to package the CDs. Comprising of three vital components; the jewel cases are made up of polystyrene which is being molded by means of injections in clear plastics form and are available in different colors.

The first part, the front cover of CD jewel cases, pivots to the left when opened, and has a space for holding the front cover art, along with other things that can be include like booklets for pictures or lyrics sheets (for music albums). These additional materials are inserted into and held in place by four separate protrusions, or tabs,on the inside part of the front cover.

The back cover which can be considered as the second part is of the same color tint as the front cover and is responsible to hold the CD tray. Even the interior of this cover is capable of holding any kind of art work or say track listing which is placed in the middle of the back cover and the middle media tray.

The third and last part is the middle CD tray which holds the disc and keeps it in place; it is attached to the back cover. The hole of the CD is being clasped by means of the circular core teeth present inside the middle tray. This keeps the CD jewel case right at the center and thus keeps its optical surface from any kind of dirt, scratch and damage which may render it unreadable. Initially, it was made up of supple and flexible black polystyrene material. But nowadays you can also find jewel cases made up of transparent polystyrene which is a very delicate material. Thus, you can see the printout’s reverse side which is placed in the back cover, once the CD is taken out.

The slim line jewel case is one type of CD jewel case which is used to hold solo CDs. These jewel cases are similar to the normal CD jewel cases but are quite slim in comparison to them. The art work of the album is held in the crystal case’s front cover by means of a lip towards the right side of the case and not by the four small tabs that are usually used to hold the album artwork in any standard size. The artwork in order to fit in the CD case must be at the maximum a single folded sheet otherwise it will not fit inside the case.

But the CD jewel cases also come with certain disadvantages. For example, as there is no support beneath, so the front cover has a tendency to crack easily under a little pressure. The design of the whole CD case being pivoted only at the two very delicate plastic holds is also very weak as when it undergoes too much stress it can break easily. Even the circular core tooth which is used to clasp the CD or the DVD has a tendency to break. The grip which is used to hold the CD information print out is another issue as often it holds the paper so tightly that when you try to take the paper out, it may get crippled, scratched or even get torn.

But, besides all the disadvantages, it is one of the cheapest means of packaging CDs which makes it a favorite among the album makers. But the price goes up with additional features like slimline case, clear tray, and colored plastic, but the corresponding increase in production cost is quite insignificant.
