HTC Desire – It’s Out And It’s Good!

In terms of hardware specification, the HTC Desire is as good any other phone available right now. A 1GHz processor and 576MB of RAM in a phone was unheard of not long ago, but HTC have managed to turn that into a reality, and the results are outstanding. There are no lags or wasted seconds waiting for pages or apps to load, something which other smartphones have suffered from, having not been made with sufficient processing power for the operating system and software installed on them.

The HTC Desire’s user interface offers a mixture of usability and style that sets it apart from the competition. It features seven customizable homescreens, to which you can apply a wide range of widgets and shortcuts. Out of the box, you will find a good selection of apps and web shortcuts to play with, representing the corporations behind the release, and any service or tool not on the phone when you receive can be found on the Android Market to download.

The web browser is faultless. Pages load quickly and render correctly, scrolling through long webpages is smooth and fluid, and the browser supports some Adobe Flash content too. The media player is better than average, but is by no means a show-stopping piece of software. Media file recognition is marginally better than previous HTC Androids, adding Windows Media video and audio files to the standard assortment of MP4 videos and MP3 and AAC music.

Most of us use our phones for messaging and social networking as much as we use them to make calls, and so we have come to expect a lot in terms of messaging features on new phones. The HTC Desire meets that expectation face on, and you will be hard pressed to find another phone that makes messaging, whether it be SMS, email, Facebook or Tweets, so easy. All of the relevant boxes are ticked, and messaging on the move is made more convenient than it ever has been.

As well as being great for causal / social users, the HTC Desire is perfect for business users too. It comes with Quickoffice installed, which is an app that lets you view and edit Microsoft Office documents, and also supports Microsoft Exchange, so you can easily link up and manage your email contacts. The planner / calendar feature is a real winner too. It has a clean, easy to use interface, and integrates well with your contact lists; it even provides up-to-date weather forecasts.

To summarize, the HTC Desire finds the ideal balance of design, features and performance. It offers a fun, fast user experience and some of the best communications tools available in phones today. It is definitely a good purchase!
