The Technology Behind The T-Mobile G2
The Galaxy S series has consistently brought quality phones to the market, with options available to each major US carrier. Now T-Mobile is gaining the G2 in addition to the Galaxy S Vibrant. The G2 combines nearly every good series feature with a few great perks.
The G2 phone has several great features that can be compared to the Galaxy S series. It faithfully delivers a 5-megapixel camera and full wireless capabilities (Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11 b/g/n). Most new phones have these features, but it’s good to have the basics covered. The G2 has 4 gigabytes of internal memory, more than the Epic 4G and Fascinate’s 2 gigabytes but short of the Captivate and Vibrant’s 16 gigabytes. It has a microSD card slot expandable up to 32 gigabytes, matching the Captivate and outpacing other series phones. Information about T-Mobile G2 accessories options are promised soon. Extra chargers should of course be included, and standards like official cases are expected. For prices, other Galaxy S phones range from $59 (Captivate) up to $649 (Epic 4G), but the G2′s price is still under wraps. Still, there are specific rate that may be heavily affected by the carrier associated. We just hope that the G2 will fall competitively within this range.
There are, however, a handful of drawbacks. The phone is actually heavier than any other Galaxy S phone, but only by a single ounce (6.5 ounces versus the Epic 4G’s 5.5). The screen is 3.7 inches (diagonally), which is a surprise since every other Galaxy S phone is 4 inches. That’s not a huge difference, but some may dislike the decreased size. The last negative might be more significant. The G2 has an 800-megahertz processor; all other series phones have a 1-gigahertz processor. The latter is almost expected for modern Android phones, so the slower processor is a bit perplexing. Numbers can mislead, so users may not notice or care about the difference.
The G2 offers some great features. It does have 4G, joining only the Epic 4G among series phones. Theoretical download speeds reach 14.4 mbps (as stated by T-Mobile), and practical speeds should be fast enough for nearly anyone. (Data coverage can be viewed at T-Mobile’s website.) Fans of Android will love this: the G2 is one of only a handful of phones shipping with Android 2.2 (Froyo), and it’s the only Galaxy S phone that has Froyo preinstalled. It will have Flash support and the most updated, efficient Android OS. The G2 also has a QWERTY keyboard, just like the Epic 4G (the only phone in the Galaxy S series that has this feature). Phone keyboards are a watershed issue, but for what it’s worth, those who have gotten a sneak peak of the phone claim that the keyboard is easy to use.
The phone continues a line of excellent phones, now offering two great Galaxy S options to T-Mobile customers. This is a great phone for any user, and it’s the perfect Galaxy S phone for those who want 4G, a physical keyboard, and the most up-to-date Android OS.
