The Walkie Talkies Of 2010
Growing up in the 70s and 80s, kids wanted the coolest toy of the day – the walkie talkie. There were endless ways to play with walkie talkies, such as contacting fellow ‘soldiers’ during army games, and waiting until after lights out to secretly talk to best friends down the street. The kids of that generation have long since graduated to mobile phones and the new generation of kids have all kinds of technological games and gadgets to keep them occupied, but that does not mean that walk talkies have become redundant.
Walkie talkies are sometimes now referred to as two-way radios, and the name is not the only new thing about them. The walkie talkies of the past have been brought into the 21st Century by companies such as Motorola and Audiovox, who make two-way radios that feature all sorts of options, such as built-in altimeters, barometers, thermometers, and digital compasses.
Today’s walkie talkies are not just about new features, though there are lots of good ones, they have taken the basic features and made them much better. Modern walkie talkies can send signals over distances of several kilometers – a far greater distance than was earlier imagined. The batteries in new walkie talkies are long-lasting, and can be re-charged when they run down. In the old days, dead batteries meant buying expensive new batteries.
A built-in global positioning system (GPS) is one of the most notable features of the latest walkie talkies; it helps you remain on your path or find your way back to where you started your trip. You can even get weather data sent right to your walkie talkie if you so desire, so you will never again have to be shocked and dismayed by inclement weather if you are out fishing or hiking.
Walkie talkies are helpful in a variety of situations, although they are most popular among fishermen, hikers and campers. You do not have to spend a lot of time outside in order to find a walkie talkie to be useful; for instance, you might want to have one on hand in the case of a natural disaster. We all rely so much on cell phones, but they are actually not that reliable, so it certainly makes sense to have a back-up plan.
Walkie talkies are an excellent deal, and you can find some for the low price of only $100. There are no additional costs involved with walkie talkies since, unlike cell phones, they do not require you to pay for calls. Moreover, they are a great long-term investment because even if you only use them once in a while, they will last for many years to come.
